Backgammon: from controls to your first round

Backgammon gives you a focused activity to play in your browser. Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Check the rule that explains your first action. Look at what changes after your first action.

Local two players; no doubling cube, stakes or remote matching.

Try a more deliberate round

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Refer to the controls when needed.

The objective of a round

Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

Work through the instructions

  1. Roll and use the maximum legal number of dice; doubles give four moves.
  2. Enter barred pieces first.
  3. Points with at least two enemies are blocked; a lone enemy is hit.
  4. Bear off only after all pieces reach home.

Your inputs

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

A closer look at one example

When only one die can be used and either is individually playable, use the larger die. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Keep the game’s format in mind.

Keep this in mind

An oversized bear-off requires no piece farther from the exit. Compare the situation with the worked example. Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention.
